Sunday services and gatherings are streaming on Facebook and ZOOM. Check our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/UUSouthold/ for updates. And check our Home page. Instead of passing the plate, we welcome checks to First Universalist Church of Southold, P.O. Box 221, Southold, NY 11971 and identify on the memo line if the monies should go towards your pledge/contribution for operations, to the Minister’s discretionary grants for those in need or for another specific purpose. To save trips to the post office, we are exploring an online way to contribute.

Feeling powerless? Take action! While you are home, here is a list of wonderful organizations that benefit our area both during this crisis and year-round.

The first Sunday “plate of the month” has traditionally been donated to a worthy cause. Instead we invite you to give freely to the charities of your choice. The following list has been prepared to make it easier to give but is by no means complete and does not include worthy national or NYC organizations.

The day center is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing which provides consistent shelter and case management. Rural Migrant Ministries

Nurturing leadership

Standing with the disenfranchised, especially farmworkers and rural workers; Changing unjust systems and structures and implements its Mission through three program areas:

1. Accompaniment
Through the Accompaniment Program, RMM accompanies rural workers – especially farmworkers – who seek to improve working and living conditions. For over twenty years RMM has coordinated the statewide Justice for Farmworkers Legislative Campaign seeking to ensure that the voice of the workers is heard at the policy-making tables that impact their lives. In 2019, Governor Cuomo signed the Farmworker Fair Labor Practices Act, removing the exclusion of farmworkers from New York State Labor Laws.
2. Popular Education: Experiential and Popular Education are key components of RMM’s efforts to strengthen rural leaders. RMM hosts the Liturgia Rural Worker Education Center in Wayne County, Spark Center in Sullivan County, and the Amandla Rural Worker Education Center in Riverhead, on the eastern end of Long Island.
3. Youth Empowerment: Since the 1980s, we have been firmly committed to empowering rural children to create opportunities for themselves while at the same time learning how to change their world. Our programs offer a variety of experiences that nurture awareness, creativity, problem-solving and leadership development. Our youth travel many miles from isolated communities in order to develop and lead their own out-of-school programs. In the process, they internalize the concepts of self-worth and hope.
