Irene called the meeting to order at 7:10
Peter Marren, the architect chosen for our project, spoke at length about progress made on the design of our church. He has spoken with Southold Town officials about our site plan. Mr. Marren noted our site is zoned “R-O; residential-office,” and that churches are a permitted use. He also was in contact with Stacy Paetzel of Marshall Paetzel Landscape Architecture of Mattituck to develop ideas about our site. He has worked with Nathan Corwin, surveyor in the past. Mr. Marren suggested we meet with members of the Southold Town planning commission to remind them, and ourselves, of what will be expected of our project. He was made aware that Bill Moore has the architect’s agreement for perusal.
He addressed the issue of whether the congregation would be open to a new concept, or are wedded to replacing the building exactly. (“It was impossible to repair Humpty Dumpty.”) Mr. Marren noted that the first meetings between the Building Team and himself would be to establish a guiding principle for our project, to get an idea of what the congregation would like and what would be practical, and to start dealing with the nuts and bolts of design. He mentioned that he saw the primary challenge to be how to situate the new church on the site. A parking lot will take up the most room on our site and so should be carefully considered. He also noted that siting of the “Blue House” may become problematic, especially where parking is concerned. Bill Gorman offered advice on the practicality of moving the building. Mr. Marren had several preliminary sketches of the site plan and spent some time discussing them with the team. It was noted that perhaps the sanctuary could be rotated and the parrish hall could be situated slightly differently in relation to that building and the parsonage. There was some discussion from the Team about how to enter the building: from a redesigned front entrance, from a central entrance from the parking lot, etc. Mr. Marren stressed the need for transitions from both the hustle and bustle of the outside world to the sacred space of the sanctuary, and from the dignity of the sanctuary to the utility of the parish hall.
The Team was asked to think about what was discussed at our meeting to prepare for our next.
The Team reluctantly accepted the resignation of Laurie Ullman.
Meeting adjourned at 9:20pm. Next meeting will be December 1.
