September 2025

We are in the midst of an annual fund drive to fulfill our member commitment to the New York State Unitarian Universalist Advocacy Net. Our August Share The Plate collection was very generous – THANK YOU – and we should be able to reach our goal this month.

A135/S138 – Medical Aid in Dying has long been a priority of NYUUJ, since it was first introduced in 2016. Passed by the NYS Legislature in June of this year and applauded by the NYS Bar Association, this bill allows terminally ill, mentally capable adults with a prognosis of six months or less to live to request from their doctor a prescription for medication they can take to die peacefully in their sleep. As of August 20, 2025 it is uncertain whether Gov. Hochul will sign the bill into law. If she does, it will make NY the
12th US jurisdiction to legalize this deeply personal end-of-life choice.

ONGOING ACTIONS on behalf of allies:
– C.A.S.T. always needs non-perishable staples and personal care items.
– En Mi Camino (“On My Way”) new or gently used shoes for all ages though the greatest need is for children’s shoes.
– North Fork Environmental Council (NFEC) is holding their next Repair Café on Saturday, September 13, (1-4 p.m.) which conflicts with our Congregational Retreat (10 am-2 pm). While we heartily invite members and friends to attend the retreat, we are hoping to support NFEC on that day also. In the meantime, continue bringing in your unused paper goods: greeting cards, bows, wrapping paper, gift bags, note cards, notebooks, writing paper, envelopes, stationery, cardboard boxes, calendars, etc. BTW – Some of
these items will be donated to C.A.S.T. for school supplies.  Donations for the above organizations can be brought to the church any time you come.

YOUR PRESENCE IS ALWAYS WELCOME at SAC / 8th Principle Task Force which meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month – next SAC meeting September 10, from 4-5 pm, in person (small gathering space) OR via Zoom link which will be emailed on Tuesday. Questions? Please contact Patte at pattemcgoo@yahoo.com.
