We are truly blessed to have the extraordinary Charlotte Day as our Music Director. With her globe-hopping background as a child concert pianist, she graduated from the University of Chicago, and started a master's program at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she met her husband Malcolm. Charlotte also taught music at Indiana, Notre Dame University and Bethel College,
and comes to us after 20 years as music director with First Unitarian Church in Pittsburgh, PA.

Charlotte is responsible for bringing world class musicians into our sanctuary for Sunday services, as well as for our Concerts At the Bend music series.  We never tire of her music, or that which her guests so graciously provide.  Join us for a service or concert - it will be worth the trip!

Weekend of Great Music – Saturday, August 22nd & Sunday, August 23rd

James Sheppard and Nick Kilkenny in Concert – August 22nd, 7:30 p.m.

Many of us have had the opportunity to hear one or both of these talented young artists share their musical gifts during a Sunday service.  Now they are coming together to offer an evening of classical music for our enjoyment.  James Sheppard, currently enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music, will play piano selections including a toccata by Bach, and two of his own original compositions.  Nick Kilkenny, a bass studying at SUNY-Buffalo, will perform German lieder, and French and Italian art songs.  It is sure to be an evening of exceptional music from these two aspiring young performers.  Time:  7:30 p.m.  Admission:  free.  Donations welcome.

Concerts at the Bend – Sunday, August 23, 4:00 p.m.

Concerts at the Bend is enjoying its fifth season this year.  This concert promises to be an exciting one, so save the date and invite friends and neighbors, especially young ones, as there will be a special treat for them.  This event will see the return of Jeffrey Wentz, piano, who performed in our concert series with Charlotte Day last Fall.  Jeffrey and Charlotte will team up to play four-hand piano compositions, as well as solos.  The program will include a Mozart sonata and Debussy suite.  As an added bonus, and one that will appeal to the child in all of us, Malcolm Day will narrate “The Carnival of Animals” as the pianists perform music by Saint-Saens.  As in the past, all concert-goers are invited to stay after the performance to meet the musicians at a reception.

Being mindful that many people are watching their budgets very carefully this year, we are holding concert prices at affordable levels.  Admission will be $15 for adults, $5 for students, with children 12 years and under invited to attend at no cost.  No advance tickets are required, and doors will open at 3:30 pm.

Southold resident Charlotte Day, piano, founded Concerts at the Bend in 2004 and serves as its artistic director. She has performed with numerous artists and chamber groups, including Roger Drinkall, Bernard Goldberg, Reginald Kell, the Boston String Quartet, and the Ives Trio. In addition, she appeared as guest soloist with the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Symphony, and the Knoxville Orchestra. Before moving to the East End, Ms. Day was on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon and Dusquesne Universities, and founded Shadyside Concerts, a well-recognized chamber music series in the Pittsburgh area.
